Reciprocity and your Concealed Handgun License

April 1, 2008

In the context of your Ohio Concealed Handgun License (CHL) reciprocity is the act of Ohio and other states agreeing to recognize each other’s CHL. Ohio currently has reciprocity agreements with seventeen other states:

Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

This list is subject to be updated without notice and can be monitored by clicking:

http://www.ag.state.oh.us/le/prevention/concealcarry/reciprocity.asp

In addition, these seven states also recognize Ohio’s CHL but do not have reciprocity agreements with Ohio:

Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Vermont – making a total of twenty-five states (including Ohio).

Once you have your Ohio CHL you can apply for your Pennsylvania non-resident CHL by downloading the application from Centre County, Pa. at:

http://www.co.centre.pa.us/sheriff/license_to_carry.pdf

Fill out the application, send a check in the amount of $26.00 and include a photocopy of your Ohio driver’s license and CHL. You will receive in about two weeks a Pa. non-residence CHL – good for five years. By carrying both your Ohio and Pa. CHLs you be able to carry in the following additional states:

Georgia, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Texas – giving you a total of  twenty-nine states.

By spending $20.00 more, you can apply for New Hampshire’s CHL by downloading their application at:

http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/nhsp/ssb/permitslicensing/documents/dssp260.pdf

and again include a photocopy of your Ohio driver’s license and CHL. Once you get your New Hampshire’s non-residence CHL will be able to carry in the following additional states:

Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Dakota – giving you a total of  thirty-four states.

These additional two CHLs will yield the most extra states for the money. You can expand this number by applying to other states on an individual basis (if those states grant non-resident licenses. CHL laws change without notice so the listed states may vary. To keep up-to-date on all the states go to:

 http://www.handgunlaw.us/

Remember you must obey the laws of the state you are in. The above link will allow you to research the laws of each state you plan on being in while carrying.
